Martin contributed greatly to the development of the Outdoor Recreation Industry through his past associations on the board of the Queensland Outdoor Recreation Federation and membership with Recreation Training Queensland. He was for many years the South-East Queensland representative for the Professional Association of Climbing Instructors (P.A.C.I.) with whom he was Instructor Trainer for 10 years and assisted in the development of Climber Trainer Courses prior to the introduction of the Outdoor Recreation Training Package; the now accepted standard for Outdoor LEader training.

In 1995, Martin developed and delivered a core subject for Griffith University in Survival Skills for Photo-Journalists the course ran for four years until 1999.  This course gave many students skills for careers in photojounalism in third world countries.
