Enrollment strategy
Students typically wish to enroll and attain a Certificate IV Qualification but you may study at Certificate II and Certificate III level as well. We have found that most students require training at Certificate II and III to gain the pre-requisite skills and knowledge to tackle the Cert IV in Outdoor Recreation successfully.
It has become apparent to us over the past 10 years since implementation of the Training Package for Outdoor Recreation that the structure of the Certificate IV course includes prerequisite requirements that are not intrinsic within the structure of the Qualification.
Because of this we are wary to enroll students directly into a Certificate IV course. Rather, all students are encouraged to complete either
- an RPL application (Recognition of Prior Learning - see tab at right) to ascertain their suitability to commence training at Certificate IV level or
- to complete Certificate II and/or III training prior to enrolling at Certificate IV. This ensures development of a solid skills base and produces a much better result for the student – they will be ‘work ready’ at completion of the course. This strategy also gives the option of exit from the course with a valid Qualification (at Certificate II or III level) should the student require.
So, can I commence directly at Certificate IV level?
Yes, you can commence at Certificate III or IV. However to enrol directly and successfully complete a Certificate IV you will need to have experience in the activity areas at a level of independent and competent participation, possibly with experience in trip planning and leading. Additionally you will require some vocational experience (ideally) in the Fitness, Sport or Recreation Industry having worked within a facility or similar thus having developed the prerequisite skills of dealing with client groups, working in teams and having a working knowledge of a Sport & Recreation business or similar.
The above skills base are ordinarily developed within a 6 to 12 month time frame by studying both the Certificate II and III in Outdoor Recreation.
Studying the prerequisite modules at Certificate II and III will not increase the cost
If you think that you might be able to commence study at Cert III or IV level directly, you are advised to submit an RPL application to ascertain your current level of capability and experience. Unfortunately, without first assessing your current competence, we can not guarantee your success in meeting Cert III or Cert IV course pre-requisite requirements.
Which qualification do I need?
If you are seeking entry to the Outdoor Recreation Industry then you should complete the Certificate II and possibly, to increase your employability, activity skills sets at Certificate III.
If you are wanting to gain employment as an Outdoor leader in a particular activity or activities (ie Abseiling Guide, Rockclimbing Guide, Canoeing or Kayaking Guide or Bushwalking Guide) then Certificate III level training is the correct exit point; Certificate III qualifies you as an independent guide in the activities that you have studied.
If you wish to gain more indepth training including advanced activity planning and programming and activity management, then you should study Certificate IV.
